The troubleshooting expert told me that I need to download this software that only runs on Mac or Windows in order to update it? What if I bought this controller on the basis that I’m going to be using it like the way they’re showcasing it in that promotional photo, as in, I’m one of those generation of kids that never touched a traditional computing device in their life? Interestingly enough, customer support is aware of this issue and will gladly email you a scripted reply that essentially says, “wait until the remaining battery charge on the controller drains out and then start charging it when you come back 12 days later and see that the LED lights are finally off.” Either that or you found that one obscure reddit thread about this exact issue. But right now, that doesn’t matter since you’re currently panicking that you might have bricked your $80 (taxes are steep over in most metropolitan areas) controller beyond repair and steelseries is going to tell you that you’re SOL since you’re past the 14 day return period for it. The product webpage for the Nimbus+ says its firmware can be upgraded using the steelseries engine software, which runs only on Mac and Windows.

So what’s the problem, you ask? Holding down the Home button on the Nimbus+ controller for five seconds is also how you manually turn the controller off or on, and… well, that feature doesn’t play nice with the Apple TV at all. Paring it to the system wasn’t a big deal, but I did notice something peculiar about the how the Apple TV interacted with it- in order for you to go back to the Home Screen after starting up an app, you have to hold down the Home Button on the controller for about 3 seconds instead of just pressing the button normally on a Siri Remote. It all started when I got myself a replacement Apple TV for the last one I lent to someone a long time ago who somehow lost the thing and paired the controller to the device. Then it becomes a real nightmare, and I’m not too sure who to blame for the lack of communication, honestly. It’s meant to be targeted towards gamers who are deep in the Apple ecosystem, which is fine and dandy, but the problem comes when the controller starts exhibiting erratic behavior that you can’t seem to fix.

It's just a shame these companies won't work together to give us something as basic as native controller support in Steam. The M1 chip is a beast and I can play games I could never play on Integrated Intel Graphics. If you can manage to get all planets in alignment and you're willing to put in a little effort, you can have a good experience playing 2D games on your M1 Mac thanks to this app.

I wish it supported PS4 controllers, but luckily I have a Switch controller so it works for me. At least we have something to play 2D Steam games until Valve gets it together. Otherwise, I applaud the developer for his effort and making the app free. So you can move around in 3D games but not look (which makes 3D games unplayable). You can map the mouse to the right joystick and it does control the mouse pointer on the desktop, but for some reason it doesn't translate to looking around once you are in the game.

It worked fine on 2D games that don't require a mouse for looking around. Until Steam updates controller support, this is the best we get. This is the only app I could find that will let me use a controller with 2D Steam games on my M1 Mac on Big Sur.
